I love this movie.. but wasn't it Jakarta that did a version of the theme tune?

That's correct, Jakarta (Aka Dave Lee), whose many psuedo names include Joey Negro released a 4/4 version called "American Dream", which has seen features on numerous 'chillout' albums... such a nice piece of music.
